EXCAVATOR AUGER: PRACTICAL GUIDE TO USE
Proper use of the excavator and skid steer loader auger means that the equipment is always efficient, increases its operability, and safeguards the work from unforeseen events and possible damage, which otherwise can be economically costly and at the same time generate considerable wasted time. The goal of this article is to advise and inform you of the do’s and don’ts to achieve fast, effective, and safe processing
How to prepare and connect the drill
It usually comes with the machine attachment, which is also made of steel. This tool allows it to be connected to the operating machine. The connection, for safety reasons, should be made with the excavator with the engine off and ideally located in an area that is as level and free of obstacles as possible. Especially in construction site areas, be very careful of foreign objects or bodies that could get stuck in the equipment.
Here are the steps to be taken:
– Connect the auger to the mechanical boom via the machine attachment
– Connect the hydraulic lines of the operating machine to the auger connectors
– Grease the pivot points properly

Precautions before use
After installation and connection to the operating machine is finished, do the following preliminary actions:
– Check that everything is in order and that all components are well connected to the operating machine
– Operate the machine at low RPM
– At idle speed, activate the excavator’s hydraulic system and check that the auger works in both directions
Installation of accessories
Once all function checks have been completed, it will be possible to connect the appropriate attachment to the drill depending on the type of work required. Accessories should be distinguished by the type of engagement into two types. At “joint” for use with the Drill Bits and at “block” for the Concrete Mixer the Stump Crusher, theRotary Harrow and the Log Splitter Screw.
For an ideal installation, proceed as follows:
– Grease well the hex pin of the auger that serves as the connector
– Connect the accessory to the hex pin of the auger
– When the accessory is connected, insert the locking screw to keep the connection stable
– Be careful and always remember, to avoid possible damage to the mechanical parts, to activate the correct connection when replacing an accessory with another of a different type (joint/block)

Useful tips
The goal when using these machines is to get the work done accurately, done in reasonable time, and free of unpleasant snags that can slow down operations. In this regard, we list a number of tips that can be useful for the purpose:
– Avoid overstressing or forcing the auger during drilling, but let it work properly; incorrect use can impair its operation and damage its mechanical parts
– When using drill bits, assess well the moisture content of the soil and its composition if, for example, it is loamy or stony
– Before proceeding, make sure that no obstacles or particularly compacted debris are concealed in the ground that can damage the instrumentation
– If it is possible, it is a good idea to make use of the QM machine attachment. This ensures full drill compatibility and customization with the excavator being used. It also allows the auger to be more performant and the end user to be 100% guaranteed by QM on operation.
– Check equipment often and maintain it with care
– Grease the hexagonal connector at the auger outlet to prevent deterioration and rusting as it is a part exposed to the weather
– Replace used oils periodically to have an efficient hydraulic system at all times
Occupational Safety Standards
Operators have an obligation:
– to always act in accordance with safety regulations and be aware of the risks that can result from unscrupulous behavior.
– to always wear the personal protective equipment (PPE) both while maneuvering and while changing attachments.
– to know the procedures in case of an emergency
– to constantly make sure that no people are in the vicinity while working
The surrounding work area must always be cleared, properly yarded and set up to standard with clearly visible signs and warning notices. Strict adherence to safety procedures minimizes the danger of accidents and ensures a safe working environment.
